Dick and the Roadmasters Band 2009

Dick and the Roadmasters enter their seventh year with some new faces, a number of new tunes, and a great new sound. Dick carries on as leader, a position he has held since the group's beginnings in 2002. His rich baritone vocals dovetail with his songwriting talents and guitar abilities to create the centerpiece for this group, rapidly becoming a fixture on the blues scene both locally and regionally. Beside Dick, Larry Bloomfield has played with the group since it's inception and adds his considerable talents on blues harp and support vocals. "The sound that we get with the keyboard, harp, and sax gives us an almost horn-section-y kind of sound that I don't think sounds like anyone else," says Dick. J. Scarr, formerly with Kelly Richey, has taken over on bass. His solid bottom end ties in perfectly with the pulsing rhythm coming from long time Cincinnatian Merry Herbert on drums. Dick's relationship with these fine players goes back to Dick's open jam at the Midway Cafe' in Ft Thomas, KY in Merry's case, and, in J's case, all the way back to playing the fireworks on the river with Billie Gant in the early 90's. "I'm thrilled with the new crew" says Dick; "we've been able to do things with this lineup that we never could with just the two guitars, even with Steve Barone on the other one". Steve has moved further in the direction of the jazz sounds that he loves so much, and has new CD in the works. Check on his progress at www.stevebaronejazz.com. Steve's departure opened the door for the addition of Laura Snyder, a student of Dick's, to bring her talents on the Les Paul guitar and percussion. As the newest addition (2008), she is making her presence felt on rhythm, and is expected to add her improvisational talents to the mix soon. Across the stage from Laura is Susan Baird on keyboard. Playing with Dick and the Roadmasters since 2007, Susan has found ways to fill the open spaces with her piano and organ abilities, as well as complementing Dick's voice with her own, and rounding out the horn sounds built around the saxophone talents of Brian Flanery, a member of the well known national show group The Van-Dells along with Dick when they aren't playing the blues. Flanery has appeared with Dick at 2008's Cincinnati Blues Fest as well as opening for Delbert McClinton with the Roadmasters in 2007. With their next CD expected in late 2009, Dick and the Roadmasters are moving forward while looking back at those who have paved the way in the blues. "Never lose sight of where this stuff came from, and add your own flavor to it, and you end up with your own sound," says Dick of his philosophy on the blues. |
